More MTI memories

There are 37 adults and 22 children who participated in this SPLICE at MTI. Going to six continents! We have been encouraged and blessed by each and everyone of you! We look forward with great anticipation to see how God will use all of you throughout the world! We will keep all of you in our prayers!

How will our kids be defined?

T.C.K.-THIRD CULTURE KID
Definition:
An individual who having spent a significant part of the developmental years in a culture other than the parent's culture, develops a sense of relationship to all the cultures, while not having full ownership in any. Elements from each culture are incorporated into the life experience, but the sense of belonging is in relationship to others of similar experience.
Interaction International

Brad and I were called up to the front of the class for a little experiment involving glasses of cranberry juice and lemonade. We were asked to smell, taste, observe and comment on them individually. Then "Aunt Sandy" mixed the two drinks and asked us to comment again. The resulting concoction looked different, smelled different and of course, tasted different. It was a third drink, unique in it's own right. And so it will be for our kids...one part American, one part Austrian and yet uniquely third culture kids...

We got into groups and identified the benefits and challenges that TCK face in regards to Mobility, Transcultural Experiences and Ministry. It was exciting and yet a bit overwhelming to think about all that we may encounter as a result of serving overseas.

The pictures below are just a few of the kids here that will be adjusting to new cultures, languages etc... please pray for them to continue to grow in God's grace as they struggle in the days that lie ahead...

Too Fried to Post...

Since the last time I posted, a lot has happened! Our brains have been crammed with information that will be helpful with transition and culture shock, our emotions have been put on high alert as we have experienced who we really are under stress and we have been encouraged by the many ways we can promote spiritual vitality in our stressful lives ! It is very difficult to give you a sense of all that we are accomplishing here, but I will try to give you some snippets of what we have been up to.

Thursday in our classes, we talked a lot about spiritual vitality and how it must emerge from 3 foundational truths.
1. God is God
2. God may not be safe, but He is faithful
3. God is good (even when there is suffering)
In God's perfect timing, He knew that this day we specifically needed to be reminded of these truths. It was this very afternoon that we told our kids that Neena's cancer had relapsed and that she would be starting chemo again. We really had a sweet opportunity to talk with the kids about these truths and pray for them and Neena's health. We felt the Lord's tenderness as we talked and prayed together as a family.
On Friday morning we started in our Growth Groups, where we do a Bible study and pray for one another. During this meeting we had to share with each member of our group one strength for them to capitalize on and one area of growth for them to attend to. It was very intimidating at first, but I think we all left very encouraged! The rest of the day we focused on transition, culture entry and we played a four culture game. That evening, our friends the Steffens arrived from IL.

On Saturday, we headed off to Focus on the Family (www.family.org) You could play there for hours. There are playgrounds, an area for reading, dress up, puppets, the Wardrobe from Narnia, a sitting area for watching Veggie Tales and of course, a 3 story slide. We packed a picnic lunch and enjoyed the view of Pikes Peak from Focus.

In the afternoon we went to visit the Garden of the Gods park. It has spectacular views and the kids had a great time climbing up and down the rocks.

Sunday, we met Jackie Smith and Tracy Moses (from FL) who are out here taking some classes at the Focus on the Family Institute and we went to church at a PCA church called, Village 7. Then we got some good ol' Kentucky Fried chicken and enjoyed the beautiful weather at a local park.

Sunday evening, our community of MTI'ers put on a talent show. Can you guess who volunteered to be the emcee? Our family did a skit using the song "Favorite Things" from the Sound of Music. We changed the words of the song to coincide with what we have been learning here at SPLICE. It was actually pretty funny. Everyone did a great job and it was also a time where we really got a look into each other's ministries.

Today while we learned about some techniques for language learning and how to handle cultural differences, in the kids' classes, they talked about feelings. I think the teachers described the different types of feelings that are normal with this process of transition and moving and then gave the kids an opportunity to express how they are feeling. Luke described his feelings as being sad, mad and happy. Sad because he misses his friends and family, mad because Neena's cancer has come back and happy that we are going to tell people about the love of Jesus! (I think he is going to be the next Billy Graham) Abby was honest too, and said she is mainly sad. "I want my friends back", she said. Levi has also expressed wanting his friends. Tonight he told me he was "going to go upstairs to get Ethan and James". I'm thankful that MTI is giving them a language to express themselves and a safe environment where they feel the freedom to share what is on their hearts. Please continue to pray that God would use this time to minister to them also and that they would continue to grow in the knowledge of His love for them in all of this!

I know this post has been long. Next time I'll try not to wait so long to get you caught up with our lives...now you see why some nights I have been just too fried to post!

Happy Meeting Anniversary!

It was 11 years ago that Brad and I met for the first time in Vienna! Hard to believe that in less than 2 1/2 weeks we'll be living there! God has done an amazing work in both of our lives and I love growing with you and sharing in struggles too! Happy Meeting Anniversary Honey!

Isaiah 44:3

Isaiah 44: 3-4
For I will pour water on thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants. They shall spring up among the grass like willows by flowing streams...

I arrived here feeling parched, thirsty and ready for a good flooding from the Spirit

My prayer for my time here would be that I would leave here refreshed, well watered and blooming...

(these were images I took pictures of while on a "God walk"...an exercise where we looked for God to meet us, as we walked outside with limited distractions)

Love one another

"A new command I give you: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another"
John 13:34-35

I have felt a real sense of community here. Everyone knows what it is like to be displaced, be raising support and often fearing the unknown. You can share your heart with others and usually they can relate and not think you are weird! My fellow MTI'ers let me borrow their cars, nebulizers, Nestle choc. milk mix and pick up our kids from class, so we can have a break. This group of amazing people have displayed extreme generousity...not thinking twice about giving when someone among us has a need. Maybe it is because they get that what we have is truly not our own...but instead the Lord's. I have been challenged by this and also very much encouraged. Thank you my fellow MTI'ers for showing me the love of Christ!

ER fun...not!

Sunday afternoon Levi started running a high fever again, so we thought since it had been 6 days of him being sick we should go to the ER. 6 hours later, bloodwork and a urine specimen, concluded that he had a urinary tract infection. Now he is on antibiotics and will hopefully be on the mend soon! Please continue to pray for us, as this is taking it's toll on all of us!

Weekend Fun

So yesterday we set off for Pike's Peak. It took a little while to get a rental car...but finally Brad got the last mini-van from the airport. We drove up the mountain...and it was really fun to see the spectacular views and have the kids holding on for dear life as there is no guard rail and the drop off is really steep! Once we got to 14,000 feet...it was snowing! The kids enjoyed a little hot chocolate and trying to catch snowflakes with their tongues!
Part of the view from Pike's Peak

Ed Dunigan (Brad's roomate from college) came from Denver to meet up with us

Another family from MTI also visiting Pikes Peak

Luke eating snowflakes in June!

Joanna (the newest addition to our family) and Abby (sorry I can't rotate it!)

Brad loved the striations in the snow!

After eating really good pizza at a place called "Marilyn's", we found a local park to burn off some steam! Brad must have eaten too much pizza because he broke the swing! Fortunately he was ok...except for his bruised pride! We all certainly got a good laugh!

On Friday we discussed conflict in our classes. When missionaries were asked what the most stressful thing was about living on the field, the response was...confronting others. This weekend our homework was to ask a friend, family member and significant other how we handle conflict, the affect or impact it has on you and what I could be doing better or differently to handle conflict. A few of you might be getting a call tonight!

We also have been asked to chew on this...maybe you can too!

"What you know about yourself you can change, What you do NOT know about yourself controls you!".

Midwesterners meet!

Stacey and Amy Flammer

Joe and Amy

Joanna (going to Hungary) & Kristina (going to Romania)

Today has been jammed packed with worship, group exercises, a field trip to Focus on the Family (where the kids recorded their own Adventures in Odyssey CD), personal coaching time, a "community" meeting...where we planned upcoming events like a movie night, a bowling night and a group talent show...then we went to go get ice cream!
That was when the adventure began...

So we were getting ready to go get ice cream and started talking with another couple who are here getting ready to serve in New Zealand as church planters...as we were talking, we discovered that Amy is from BLOOMINGTON/NORMAL and went to the same church where I went(Eastview Christian Church) and that I was a youth sponsor when she was in JR. HIGH! Is that too weird or what! The funny thing is, we both felt a connection to each other as soon as we met(must be because we are "normal" HA!)...we also are in the same growth group together! (which is our bible study group) It seems pretty unreal to come all the way to CO for cross-cultural training and run into someone who has some of the same favorite mid-western places as me! It is a little present from the Lord...having a heart connection because you have shared similar experiences and know and love some of the same people. She and her husband Joe, are an awesome couple who really have a contagious energy for the Lord! I have a feeling that our mid-western connection could bond us for life and I look forward with great anticipation to see what the Lord is going to do in New Zealand as a result of their faithfulness!

I wish I could describe our adventure to go get ice cream...as we literally went over the river and through the woods...but writing about it won't do it justice! You had to be there to experience the trials of walking 3 miles with the children, crossing railroad tracks and barbed wire fences...at least the ice cream was cheap and good! Thanks Joe, for running back to get the car as you sacrificed your sweatshirt and proper digestion of your 18 scoops of ice cream! Something I will always remember and smile when I think about it!
